Steven L. Lansman, M.D., Ph.D.
Professor of Surgery, New York Medical College
Chief, Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Westchester Medical Center
Valhalla, New York
Office # (914) 493-8793 - Fax # (914) 493-1610
BRIEF OVERVIEW:
Dr. Lansman received MD and PhD (Biophysics) degrees in
1977 from the State University of New York Health Science
Center at Brooklyn. He trained in cardiac surgery at S.U.N.Y.
under Dr. Randall Griepp, and in cardiac transplantation
at Stanford University Hospital, under Dr. Norman Shumway.
In 1985, after serving as Interim Chief of Cardiothorac
Surgery for SUNY Brooklyn, The Brooklyn VA Hospital, and
Kings County Hospital, Dr. Lansman joined the staff at
The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City to begin a heart
transplant program. At Mount Sinai, he performed the first
cardiac transplant with Dr. Griepp in 1986 and through
2005, performed most of the program’s cardiac transplant,
assist device, and bridge-to-transplant procedures. In
addition, Dr. Lansman has an extensive bibliography in
aortic aneurysm surgery and for over 20 years, he has
organized The Aortic Symposium series, an internationally
recognized forum for aortic surgery.
In 2001-2002, Dr. Lansman was President of the New York
Society of Thoracic Surgery and in 2002, served as interim
Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at
Mount Sinai. Currently, he is Professor of Surgery at
New York Medical College and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery
at Westchester Medical Center.
While heart transplantation, assist devices, surgery for
heart failure and aortic aneurysm surgery remain Dr. Lansmans'
special interests,
coronary bypass surgery, aortic valve and mitral valve
surgery comprise most of his caseload; in these areas,
his interests include minimally invasive approaches, OPCAB,
and particularly, mitral valve repair procedures.
